We played well. However, I don’t see the benefit of setting up for a draw when you need a win.
That approach ended up being our downfall. When you’re defending for long spells, it only takes one small mistake to get punished! We were punished in the 85th minute. Ollie Scarles (who’d had an excellent game up to that point) missed his kick, and Jimenez headed in from the cross.
It wasn’t Ollie’s fault. It was more the tactics: a setup that doesn’t allow for individual errors, or the lack of ability to sustain attacks. I think we only had two shots on target.
If you go into a must-win game with the mindset of “don’t lose,” the best you can hope for is a draw! and unfortunately, that seems to be all the manager knows.
